Edwin has just returned from a trip around the US. He is sorry he couldn't come to North Carolina and see the girls and seen Rebekah's notes on Poetry in Everyday Life. He would have had a happy visit in her home. He also enclosed short quotations from his writings for Rebeka's Book of Class Memories.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
